This whole "Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations" (FIRO) thing sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. They're using "advanced decision support tools" to decide when to release water from Lake Mendocino. Which, offcourse, is supposed to be better than, you know, using human judgment? Because humans are so terrible at predicting the weather?
The article brags about an extra 11,650 acre-feet of water storage. Big deal. That's like bragging about finding an extra french fry at the bottom of the bag. Is that really going to solve California's water crisis? I doubt it. According to a New Forecast-Informed Decision-Making Tool Implemented at Northern California Reservoir, this new system aims to improve water management.
And who's on this "Lake Mendocino FIRO Steering Committee"? USACE, Sonoma Water, Scripps CW3E, NOAA, California DWR... Sounds like a bureaucratic alphabet soup. How many meetings did they have to sit through to come up with this? And how much taxpayer money did they waste on coffee and donuts?
From Water to...Restaurants?
What's even weirder is that I also stumbled on an article about some fancy restaurant in Chennai called Firo. Coincidence? Maybe. But it's making me think. Are we going to start seeing "AI-powered" restaurants next? Where algorithms decide what we eat? I wouldn't put it past them.
This Firo place, apparently, is replacing some beloved dive bar. A "sleek dining room, with a competitive cocktail menu." Great. Just what Chennai needed—another overpriced hipster hangout. I bet the "Indian reimagined" cuisine costs more than my rent. Firo launches in Chennai with a restaurant and cocktail bar, offering a new dining experience.
The chef, some dude named Ajit Bangera, calls his cooking "simple, creative, and with an element of surprise." Translation: Expect tiny portions and a hefty bill. Oh, and the cocktails are "tweaked" with Indian ingredients. Blue pea flower syrup? Spiced jaggery syrup? Sounds like a recipe for a stomachache.
But hey, at least they have "dosa tacos." That actually sounds pretty good. Maybe.
The Illusion of Control
Here's the thing: we're giving up control. We're letting algorithms dictate our lives, from water management to what we eat. And for what? A few extra acre-feet of water? A slightly more "innovative" dining experience? It's all a facade.
DWR Director Karla Nemeth says, "Our ability to accurately forecast incoming storms has improved dramatically in recent years." Has it, really? Because I seem to recall plenty of "unprecedented" weather events that caught everyone by surprise. Maybe I'm the only one who remembers.
This whole thing feels like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. We're facing a climate crisis, and they're patting themselves on the back for saving a few drops of water with their fancy AI. It's insulting.
